I wrote this piece for the Vogue writing competition two years ago.
This was the second of the two pieces I wrote, I thought the other one was an emotional tour de force and it would be scandalous if it wasn't entered for want of the required second piece. So I stayed up all night to write it and hand delivered it the next day, when the entry date closed. I didn't get selected and felt horribly ashamed of my rushed article. This morning I decided to clean out my documents folder of any out of date musings. I finally plucked up the courage to read this again and was pretty shocked by how NOT shit it was. I mean it's not perfect but it was a hell of a lot better than I thought. Have a read and bear in mind that it was written two years ago.

A Noble Distraction

"Some girls are bigger than others", a novel sentiment chimed out to mark the conclusion to Luella's display of cute utilitarianism. I scoffed a little into my cup of tea, thinking how effortlessly The Smith's answer our preoccupation with apparently simple diversities, yet frustratingly it bore no relation to the show I had just seen, unless that is if you count the plethora of hair styles on display as warranting the title.

Each look at Luella was presented with personal touches to add character and dimension to the clothes; explosions of frizzed and matted curls, back combed quiffs raised high and pink pigtails swinging on shoulders brought the collection to life with the individuality that we, the customer inevitably would. Each girl stood out from the last, drawing my attention so far skywards from the matter in hand that my MTV generation mind couldn't even begin to register the gold lame stripes, army issue pockets, zips, buttons, buckles and bows.

The celebration of any form of personal individuality is a somewhat refreshing sight to behold on the catwalk, so understandably when Giles Deacon raised the curtain on his new collection to reveal tattooed ladies and skin girls it shook proceedings up a notch. Deacon's 'non-models', cast by Francesca Burns from the streets of Camden and Deptford optimistically reconnected the dots between the international fashion stage and his "diverse customer", an inclusive portrait completed by 80's fashion heroine Rachel Williams, grey roots and all.

"I love character," said Deacon "and am bored of seeing shows that solely rely upon a certain type of girl". Like a fickle child, fashion now says that perfection is out and oodles of character is in, Beth Ditto being the minority mascot du jour. Ditto is the poster girl for being fat and fun, or more fashionably put "larger than life", she is this seasons hot accessory embodying our newly regained liberalism (lest we forget buxom Dahl), as seen sashaying on the arm of Karl Lagerfeld around Paris and plastered naked across a billboard at Shepherds Bush junction shifting untold copies of LOVE.

Putting the weight debate aside, it's true enough that character alone sells. In life big personality has the power to cover a multitude of sins, so by cavorting ours are they attempting to hide their own? Is the wily fashion conjurer distracting us with smoke and mirrors so as to shift our attention away from an unremarkable magazine debut or collection, or is it all just harmless fun?

This month I have been pretty lucky to be featured in 2 magazines chatting about my work and the like. This one below is from the June issue of Company magazine.. which is the one with Ellie Goulding on the cover wearing what looks like a nappy(?!)

The people at Company were really nice, I first had a phone interview where I'm sure I must have sounded like a Spencer Pratt, this was followed by the picture editor coming by my studio to snap me and my paint pots on a few interesting polaroids and holgas. It was all very trial and error but thankfully this gave me time to work out my serious set designer pout! I'm pretty pleased with what emerged.

The other mag I am currently in is Art Box, they did a huge 8 page feature on me but I am waiting on them to kindly send me over some copies.. I will then shamelessly upload from that soon too!

Well I still covet the Mulberry Alexa bag and surprise surprise I still don't own one but I have upped my brown nosing a notch by making a cardboard one out of Selfridges bags for display and eventual sale in their wonder room.

In collaboration with the marvelous Supermarket Sarah I have been making bits and bobs for the Selfridges Wonder Room. A few weeks back I was given a laundry bag filled with Selfridges packing materials ie tissue paper, stickers, tags, boxes and tonnes of paper bags. The tissue paper went into decorating a giant elk head that Sarah commissioned as a centerpiece to her week 1 "Royale with Cheese" wall and the bags went into making a diamond, paper bow and an Alexa for the week 2 "Clash Mash" wall.

In addition to these yellow marvels I was asked to make two glam rock V guitars.

You can look at and buy these pieces IRL! Pop down to the Selfridges Wonder Room this week..next to all the expensive jewelry on the ground floor. Fancy.

My studio walls are where I keep track of my current work and ideas.
It can be nice to look at as well as being a huge help in saving my sketches from getting covered in tea, paint and glue.. my desk is ridiculous for this.

Luckily I have two desks, my making desk is so lumpy and bumpy now from all the glue and paint that I can't actually draw on it anymore. The second desk is supposed to be the safe haven.. the place for drawing and sewing although I did just get soil all over it when I was re-potting my cactus.

ps I wish I was making an elephants head and not an elk.

I made a space blanket for Adam to wear on stage after his stripy flag one got pinched. He ended up wearing it for an NME shoot with Dean Chalkley, which is flash. Unfortunately you can't really see it and appreciate its outrageous handmade nebula print in this photo, but I have since made up a lot more fabric which I'm going to use to make some costumes for a shoot later this month.

A few weeks back I designed and built/sewed 5 costumes for an incredible music video for EMI.

The project was great for many reasons

1. The concept was amazing
2. It was directed by my good pal Ferry Gouw
3. Brilliant David White designed and built the set
4. The song features the word babe AT LEAST 40 times

What's not to like?

So my task was to make 4 biker babe catsuits for the dancers and a mad tron, transformers robot suit for Tinie.

I made 50 of these monster heads on a job assisting Gary.

We lobbed these along with a ton of balls and bean bag monsters at two boys jumping onto crash mats. Quite a complicated scene to orchestrate so a lot of takes and a lot of running around after balls. Truly evil, I hate doing anything remotely related to ~sport~. There was beer though.

I was beeped and hollered at THREE times in he space of about 20 meters today just popping down the road to pick up Grazia. I didn't have my dress tucked into my pants nor did my skirt fly above my head, so I'm at a bit of a loss as to what came over the usually very courteous and demure van driver.

Anyway I picked up Grazia because my m8 Verity Pemberton had one of her graduate designs in the mag as look of the week. She provided Florence Welch with this number for Leeds festival. Very proud.

Kate Moross and Jo Apps did this video for Simian Mobile Disco. I was roped into proceedings for my impressive grime grinding skills and to hang out and have a laff.

I like the song, which is handy because we had to listen to it enough! Anyway, as the concept progressed some of the original ideas were cut which sadly included my fabulous dancing. My leg and chest modeling did make it through though, so keep a keen eye out for those brief glimpses of heaven.

summer read

Summer Jolly reads '09- American Pastoral by Philip Roth and um er... New Moon by Stephanie Mormon Meyer. The Pulitzer prize winning book obvs got the yar yar thumbs up but the latter was an epic disappointment, so bad the book itself got suicidal and fell apart with every turn of the page ala Karl Lagerfeld.

Collectively dumbfounded by how many unintentional literary lols one author could muster, Katie and I read the last 1/4 of the book aloud to each other. Having Katie prance around on the beach reciting 'His eyes were sad, my eyes were mad' to Spanish passers by made it fractionally easier to stomach.

Like in a game of F.L.A.M.E.S when you're left with your enemy, 9 kids, marriage and an eternity in your own personal hell I once more opted for the KILL option and threw the book in the bin and locked the sequel Eclipse in my suitcase. Katie heroically leant me her SIGNED copy of Alex James autobiography so I read that and the only peeps heard out of me for those next few days were aaaaahhhhhhGrahammmm.

Hedi Slimane

I assisted super stylist Alister Mackie a couple of weekends ago on an Another Man shoot with Hedi Slimane.

Despite whatever ideas you may already have on Hedi Slimane, I have to ruin them for you.. he was lovely, humble and so friendly, introducing himself to everyone on set and thanking us all a million times over AND carrying his own empty coffee mugs off set (typically unheard of)!!!!!!!! We talked about the weather and he flattered me by responding to my remarks on the sky and the breeze as if I said something poetically profound.

The first time model, Alex was such and angel cake, he broke my heart at least 20 times as I squeezed him into some pretty impossible and uncomfortable costumes. I reckon as he was looking into the middle distance he was considering how he could be in the skate park with his mates rather than spending his whole weekend in a studio with us. He wants to study biochemistry at university, told ya... heartbreaking.

Talking of angel cakes, Gary Card was there too offering a bit of light relief, he made some fabulous props that I cannot yet disclose but here he is doing his best Lord of the Rings impression wearing a big skirt as a cape. He is a very serious about his craft.

Nike Ducks

I assisted set designer Sarah May on her window display for Nike a few weeks back by making 22 ducks out of Nike tshirts. I assisted her last year on an o2 ad where I made an impromptu knitted rabbit and have ever since been known as the animal girl (I've made a few).

I got quite attached to my little flock of ducklings, I liked them best when they weren't covered in t-shirts (although it was fun ripping them up) and you could see all the rough edges, layers and string. I'm going to be using a lot more string and foam in future projects.

I also installed the display at Nike town over one very long night/morning, it was a race track made completely from the new summer t-shirt range that Nike are trying to flog. If you pass Nike town this summer have a look, my ducks are inside the store too. Go marvel at them.

Katie and I are going to meet The Lonely Island guys when we go on our next mythical trip to NY and I have decided that there is a greater probability of romantic success if I hedge my bets, I mean Samberg could come down with food poisoning or be out of town seeing his mum or he might not see me because a tree or a person is blocking his view or he'd be in the loo when introductions are being made and then spend the rest of the night looking at me but be to shy to say hi or maybe he'd see me, meet me, shake my hand, smile weakly and just not fancy me (LOL). So plainly for safeties sake and to prevent my trip across the Atlantic being completely fruitless I'd turn to Jorma because he would fancy me and I wouldn't mind.

It was a bright spring afternoon, a warm breeze meandered through the city air gently caressing the golden tendrils of my hair, when I saw him. He cycled towards me, proudly straddled upon his beautiful black bicycle like a white knight in a charcoal suit and crash helmet, our eyes met and our fate entwined. Barely parting my gaze from his I turned to the flame haired friend by my side and softly shouted, "OH LOOK, IT'S JEREMY PAXMAN". His greying eyebrow was already suggestively raised as he sealed our moment with a wink, an eclipse of bliss shared only by two.

I started driving lessons this week. It has taken me a while to be bothered to book them, 5 years in fact but here I am, all grown up and changing gears like Lewis Hamilton. I'm surprisingly pretty cool calm and collected, even managing to crack a few jokes while I maneuver which is a vitally important task to master if you crack as many as fast and often as me!

I think I must have impressed Andy the instructor with my three point turns and reverse parking today because he said that I was above average and ahead of schedule! Thankfully he is no looker, so I don't go all red and hormonal when he stares me down in the rear view mirror or when I accidentally grapple with his leg instead of the gear stick.

Yeah Nick's son. Chatted to him about his skinny bare legs backstage at House of Holland and took his photo too many times. Don't think the other photographers knew who he was so I had him all to myself except for when the crazy hyper girl models were leaping all over him.

It was weird because the girls are normally properly miserable but this day they were transformed, intoxicated by their hormones and completely crazed by the presence of MEN (funnily enough the sweaty photographers don't have the same effect). The room was just sex sex sex. Beautiful hungry people everywhere thinking about sex.

On the flip side I was boiling in a less than flattering Metallica jumper, chomping on an apple and snapping the hormonal madness on 2 36 exposure cameras. I'll pop the rest up here some other time.

Theatrical Anguish

I went to the theatre on Wednesday night to see Oliver with my Mum, I wasn't exactly brimming with excitement about seeing it but went anyway hoping that once I had a few glasses of pinot down me my enthusiasm would grow.

So like any seasoned show goer I headed straight to the bar to buy 2 glasses of wine for me and Shirl (that's my mum) and to order the all important interval drinks. I had no idea then how much I would actually need it!

In the Theatre Royal the seats are pretty tightly packed but I passed up that annoyance because I was only 6 rows from the front and therefore by my calculations still close enough for my idol, Rowan Atkinson's spit to hit me! Woooohooo.

Lights down, safety curtain up, conductors arms whipping around and then the very recognisable boom boom boom of 'Food Glorious Food' followed by a not so welcome sucking noise, I turn to my left and see that it's coming from the awful old woman next to me sucking on her dentures! Every 5-20 seconds she would suck so loudly that she was drowning out even 'Oom Pah Pah' and the 'As Long as he needs me' emotional crescendo. I got to the point where I couldn't care less about Bill Sykes rough love, Nancy's anguish could not beat mine. Not exactly what Mr Dickens and Lionel Barts intended I'm sure.

Second half came and my kind, foolish Mother offered to take my seat, I think because she thought her ever dramatic daughter was being ever dramatic again, but lo and behold 3 seconds into lights down her face resembled that of Edvard Munch's 'The Scream'.

Denture sucking aside the show was OK, I didn't give a standing ovation which I love doing when so inclined. I whooped a few times for Mr Atkinson when he was being humorous, which certainly did NOT include his numerous nods to Mr Bean. Gahhhh that really annoyed me, I love Rowan Atkinson, like many of you all, for his real comedy achievements, the groundbreaking, exceptional, going down in comedy history stuff like Not the 9 O'clock News and of course Blackadder but what I heard around me when he appeared on stage was 'Oh its Mr Bean' 'Ah it's Teddy' 'Hahahahaha' 'Isn't Mr Bean good' 'Mr Bean!' 'Oh look Mr Bean, suck, suck, suck'. I was screaming inside 'put pencils up your nose'. I actually really look up to that man so it made me feel a little depressed.

Next time I'm planning my theatre visits much more tactically, I'm thinking Le Cage aux Folles because I am pretty sure that most evil denture sucking oldies are far too homophobic to go see it, that or the ballet, but you always get a bored husband snoring through those... oh one cannot account for the disgraceful public when spending over 70 quid on a theatre ticket. Maybe I'll start putting on my own shows in the front room again.

Being full on arty everyday can drain the old creative juices so to avoid this travesty I like to schedule myself a lazy 'me' day. A day just for the Bacchus, lie in, loose women, chick flick etc. Problem is there are only so many times that even I can watch Bridget Jones' Diary 1 and 2 and I tend to get sick of 'me' half way through yelling at Loose Woman, Carol McGriffin for having gone ga ga over her toy boy fiance (so lame).

So at any crossroad in my day/life I like to turn to my inner goddess trinity Angelina, Nigella and Beyonce. No matter what, I know that one of these women will, like a shining light, break through for me.

Today Nigella provided just the ticket, she represents the domestic shakra and because a domestic chore, when properly exectuted creates an instant feeling of warm accomplishment, I was all hands on deck. Housework, cooking, planting hanging baskets all do the trick.

I've always been like this, I remember an evil school bully walking past my house and catching me, trowl in floral gloved hand tending to my pansies. Luckily for me I think she was so stunned and probably immeasurably impressed that no school chants were ever hatched from this, even if she had I knew that the gardening club would have my back!

Now I'm a career driven diva so I'm not by any means saying, give up and be a stepford wife but a little attention to your dometsic shakra goes along way to alline your inner goddesses which all in turn lends to a more fabulous you!

Today I have the aroma of a freshly baked banana loaf filling the air and it feels good! Having such an affinity with Nigella means that I dream about these must have accessories...

Look how shiny, fabulous and quintessentially house womanly they are! I can't wait to have one of my own. (I think the smiley husband comes in a buy one get one free deal, which is nice!)

The shelves of John Lewis' kitchen ware department really get me going but it doesn't stop there... last week I enthusiastically encouraged my Mum to buy a divine new coffee table and nest of side tables from JL and they arrived this week!!!!! So super excited I rushed out to buy pieces to style them, I chose purple and red accent colours to bring the room together.

Lessons in releasing and caring for your inner Beyonce and Ange are to come.

I first saw her work at the National Portrait Gallery when she won second prize in the 2006 photographic prize and then I was super lucky to get to work with her backstage at Fashion week for SS/08. We had fun eating the sandwiches and drinking the champagne that the models wouldn't touch.

Being a fashion photography assistant you have to kind of leave your reserved dignity at the door because you generally have to be willing to run after people shouting their name. In this case is was 'AAAAAAAGYNESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS'.

Very luckily they always enjoyed being photographed by Anna because she was so relaxed and had an amazingly complicated medium format camera that people wanted to have a good look at (brilliant but very heavy to carry about town). Additionally I was photographed by Anna a good 2-3 times a day, which obviously I liked, it made asking 'what's your favourite colour?' for the zillionth time much more palatable (I jest, my journalism is Pulitzer prize winning stuff).

Data Detox

My stupidity and laziness came and bit me on the bum recently when my Mac Book konked out on me.

It all started 3 yrs ago when I decided to be one of those fools that says 'oh the 60GB hard drive is fine for little old me, I only use in-design, photoshop, upload a zillion photos of myself a day and screen grab Beyonce and Tyra pictures like crazy.'

3 years of rough love later....

One very average day I was surfin about, most likely checking for news reports on Franco and Pattinson's whereabouts when things rapidly got ugly. Darkness, ticking and then a question mark. Merde! I think I must have been in shock because I took it all rather well.

Step one is to open a nice bottle of plonc to keep the calm flowing (any excuse)

Next step I take my baby, swaddled in its lovely little protective cover to the Mac doctor. I don't think I do myself any favours in these situations because when I'm in front of a whizz of any sort I become a bit of a thicko girl who only knows how to put stickers on her computer rather than know how to use it. I felt like saying 'I'll have you know I watch University Challenge and answer the questions correctly sometimes'.

In truth the mac men from Mac-Daddy were rather friendly, I made myself feel like a loser and quite rightly. My laziness cost me £120 in repairs and all my data (because they couldn't rescue it) which included 3 years of uni work, my portfolio, cherished photos and my i-tunes library because obviously I didn't back anything up!

I have my computer back now, which I am very happy about but she is as empty as the Mary Celeste!

Part of me is quite glad in a few ways, she is as fresh and fast as the day I bought her (just looks a bit war weary) and thankfully I won't be bumping into god awful photos of myself dressed like Pat Butcher (I had a very big thing for leopard print) or in leotards being made to dance for Miss Moross!

Oh forget that.. flickr and Sara Manara wouldn't let me get away with that one!

But most of me is pretty pissed to have lost so much work.

To complicate things further I have a pretty VIP meeting with a pretty VIP magazine next week and I need to put together my portfolio. I've managed to do a bit of internet scrounging but they're not anywhere near good enough!

I am most peeved about these two shoots that I styled, one for Teen Vogue (the first one I ever did) and the one of Daisy Lowe wearing my pieces for the Fashion week Daily. These two images are the only evidence I have! THEY ARE SOOOOO SMALL!

So a word to the not so wise, when your mac says 'start up disc full' please take care and like a loving mother offload all that unnecessary baggage from the vaults and detox together.

As you are more than likely aware by now, I am single and at a recent important meeting with my life coach and good friend Ms Coleslaw we got to discussing my ideal man. Of course since recently seeing the film 'Twilight' I said without hesitation, Robert Pattinson. He has it all, good looks, nice threads and talents in both song and acting!!! His range in Twilight for example is mind blowingly impressive, spanning from pensive stare, pained stare, slightly pained stare, very pained stare, slightly perturbed stare, angry stare, keep off my woman stare and my very favourite 'I watch you while you sleep' stare, I'd go so far as to say acting wise he is the male equivalent of Keira Knightley (as close to perfection if ever I saw it.) As for his singing, I couldn't possibly do it justice, however if you can handle having your hormones soar to a place they have never been to before I urge you to listen to his song, 'Never Think'. For the full experience print out the lyrics and follow them as his words are mysteriously inaudible but the message so unmissable, finally don't worry 1.34 mins into the track thinking you've downloaded the karaoke version, you haven't, this is how long it takes to get to the gooey song centre. Any true fan who is worth her salt will tell you the wait is worth it and umm errr it sure is!

Anyway I digress. Back at this very important meeting of minds I was encouragingly told that I stand a pretty good chance of hooking up with R.Pattz! According to very reliable sources R.Pattz and I would make a great couple, which got me to thinking how would R.Pattz and I look together?? An hour of romantic fan art later I have my answer. Something Carrie Bradshaw never thought to do during the whole Big/Aiden debaucal. Anyway, once again the findings sway unarguably in my favour! By the looks of things my single days are numbered!

R.Pattz email me!!!! But get in there before James Franco does because he keeps drop calling me and I am but a fragile woman.

5 Reasons why J.Jops should be dating The Bacchus and not The Allen

I never quite had Lily 'The Allen' Allen pegged as a thinking man's crumpet before but I nearly fell off my train seat when I found out yesterday about her and Jay Joplin (I'm slow). I just don't get it, don't get me wrong its not the age, the Allen has selected from a fine vintage. 1963 was an imp(peck)able year producing the Depp, the Pitt and Jose Mourinho (my mum likes him).

J.Jops is powerful, successful, classy, worth £100 million, a silver fox and one day to inherit his fathers Lordship title ding ding ding ding ding, undeniably she has picked a right sort, but herein lies the problem... Lady Lily, who can picture that? She has a tattoo of Homer Simpson on her wrist for pete's sake and all when JJ could have the pick of any gorgeous 20 something 'creative' type who doesn't speak like a fish wife, drink like a sailor and who's accomplishments aren't restricted to singing in cockney and insulting gay national treasures.

So just for fun here are 5 reasons why J.Jops should be dating The Bacchus and not The Allen.

1. I move like Beyonce

2. Lady Georgina sounds classier

3. I make a nice fish pie

4. I got an A* in GCSE art

5. I haven't been sick in a booze related incident for well over 4 years

So Allen, I'm not hating on you, you're a curvy independent woman and I respect that but the Bacchus/J.Jops findings are simply academic. So do the right thing babe, and just because I have a CIW soft spot for you, here is my tip for your new, better match.

He is a 1963 hunk too and handily has a book entitled 'Quit smoking today without gaining weight'. Don't resist, it's clearly meant to be.
